Holiday Advertising Campaigns: Walking Billboards for Christmas & New Year

Holiday shoppers spent $964 billion in the US during the 2025 season. The brands that captured that spending did not just run digital ads — they showed up in the shopping districts, ice rink promenades, and Christmas markets where the money was being spent.

The holiday season — roughly the six weeks from mid-November through New Year's Day — accounts for approximately 20% of annual retail sales in most Western markets. According to the National Retail Federation, holiday spending in the US reached $964 billion in 2025, up 3.7% from the previous year. In Europe, the UK alone saw GBP 82 billion in holiday retail spending, with Germany and France following closely.

For advertisers, the holiday season presents both the biggest opportunity and the biggest challenge of the year. The opportunity: consumers are actively looking to spend. The challenge: every other brand is advertising too, creating a noise level that can drown out even well-crafted campaigns. Walking billboards cut through this noise by operating in the physical spaces where holiday spending actually happens.

The Holiday Shopping Journey in 2026

Despite the growth of e-commerce, physical retail still accounts for approximately 80% of holiday shopping in the US and over 85% in Europe. People visit Christmas markets, shopping malls, high streets, and specialty stores — not just to buy gifts, but as a social activity. Holiday shopping is an experience: the decorations, the atmosphere, the seasonal food and drink.

This experiential nature makes outdoor advertising particularly effective during the holidays. People are not rushing through their commute with headphones on — they are strolling, browsing, taking photos, and looking around. Attention availability is higher during holiday shopping than at almost any other time of year.

Walking billboards become part of this holiday atmosphere. A glowing screen moving through a Christmas market at dusk feels festive and modern. It draws eyes naturally without disrupting the experience.

Holiday Walking Billboard Strategies

1. Christmas Market Deployment

Christmas markets are the highest-density pedestrian environments during the holiday season. In Europe, markets like those in Vienna, Strasbourg, and Cologne draw millions of visitors over 4-6 weeks. In the US, cities like Chicago (Christkindlmarket), New York (Bryant Park), and San Francisco (Union Square) host major seasonal markets. Walking billboards moving through and around these markets reach a captive audience of shoppers in a spending mindset. Deploy ambassadors during peak hours (4 PM - 9 PM, when markets are busiest and the ambient lighting makes screens pop).

2. Gift Guide QR Campaigns

Holiday shoppers are often looking for inspiration. A walking billboard displaying "Stuck on a gift? Scan for our Holiday Gift Guide" with a QR code linking to a curated product page is genuinely helpful — and helpful advertising converts. Segment your gift guides by recipient ("For Him," "For Her," "For Kids," "For Parents") and rotate the creative throughout the day. This tactic saw a 7.2% QR scan rate for a jewelry brand in London's Covent Garden during December 2025.

3. Last-Minute Shopper Targeting

The days of December 21-24 see a massive spike in in-store traffic from people who have not finished their shopping. These are impulse buyers with high urgency and low price sensitivity — the perfect audience. Deploy walking billboards near shopping centers with messaging emphasizing convenience and availability: "Still need a gift? [Store name] has you covered — open until midnight. 200m ahead." The directional element turns the ad into a wayfinding service.

4. New Year's Eve Event Promotion

New Year's Eve is one of the highest foot traffic nights of the year in entertainment districts. Walking billboards deployed from 7 PM onward — promoting NYE events, restaurants with special menus, bars with VIP packages, or even rideshare services for safe rides home — reach an audience that is out, active, and making real-time decisions. A restaurant group in New York deployed 6 walking billboards in Midtown on NYE and filled 340 covers from QR scan reservations that evening.

5. January Sale Pre-Launch

While other brands are winding down after Christmas, smart retailers are already promoting January sales. Walking billboards deployed on December 26-28 (when many people are still off work and out shopping with gift cards) with "January Sale starts tomorrow — scan for early access" messaging capture an audience in a spending mood that most advertisers have abandoned. This low-competition window offers some of the highest ROI of the entire holiday season.

Festive Creative Design Tips

Embrace animation. Holiday creatives on walking billboards should be animated — falling snowflakes, twinkling lights, gift boxes opening to reveal products. These animations are eye-catching in the busy holiday visual environment and feel appropriate to the season. Static images, no matter how well-designed, get lost among the Christmas decorations and competing signage.

Use warm color palettes. The traditional holiday colors (red, gold, green) work well but are used by everyone. Consider warm alternatives: deep burgundy, champagne gold, forest green. These feel festive without blending into the sea of bright red sales banners.

Show the product in gift context. Instead of showing your product alone, show it wrapped, being given, or being opened. This helps shoppers visualize it as a gift — which is the primary purchase motivation during the holidays.

Include pricing or a value signal. During the holidays, shoppers are hyper-aware of budget. Include pricing, discount percentages, or "starting from" messaging. Vague "holiday savings" copy is less effective than specific numbers.

Holiday Campaign Timeline

Early November: Book your walking billboard ambassadors. Prime shopping district slots fill up quickly during the holiday season, and ambassador availability tightens as event promoters and retailers all compete for the same deployment hours.

Mid-November (pre-Black Friday): Launch your first holiday campaign. This catches early shoppers and builds brand awareness before the Black Friday noise hits. See our Black Friday advertising ideas for that specific window.

December 1-20: Primary holiday campaign window. Focus on shopping districts, Christmas markets, and transit hubs during evening hours (3 PM - 9 PM when foot traffic peaks). Rotate creatives weekly to maintain freshness.

December 21-24: Last-minute shopper blitz. Increase ambassador deployment, extend hours, and switch to urgency-focused messaging. This is where your highest daily ROI will come from.

December 26 - January 2: Post-Christmas / January sale promotion and New Year's Eve event campaigns. Lower competition, still-high foot traffic, excellent value.
