Key Result

340% above foot traffic projections on day 1

The Challenge

The restaurant — a well-known fast-casual chain specializing in smash burgers and craft shakes — was opening its 13th location in Chicago's River North neighborhood. The problem: River North is one of the most competitive dining corridors in the Midwest. Within a three-block radius of the new location, there are over 80 restaurants competing for the same lunch and dinner crowds.

The brand had tried traditional marketing for previous openings: social media ads, local press outreach, and flyer distribution. Results were inconsistent. Social media drove awareness but not foot traffic (people would like the post but not walk to the restaurant). Flyers had a redemption rate under 0.3%. Local press coverage was hit-or-miss.

For this opening, the marketing team wanted something different: a campaign that would reach people who were already walking in the neighborhood — within decision-making distance of the restaurant — during the exact hours when they were deciding where to eat.

The Strategy

The marketing director decided to test walking billboards through AdLuxy. The strategy was built around three principles:

1. Proximity over reach. Rather than blanketing the city, focus exclusively on a 5-block radius around the restaurant. Every impression would be within walking distance of the front door.

2. Timing over frequency. Deploy only during peak decision-making windows: 11 AM-1:30 PM for lunch and 5-8 PM for dinner. No wasted impressions during off-hours.

3. Dynamic creative over static messaging. Use multiple creative variants that adapted to time of day and real-time conditions.

The Setup

Phase 1: Pre-Opening Buzz (Days 1-2)

Two ambassadors deployed for 6 hours each day (11 AM-2 PM and 5-8 PM), covering the streets surrounding the new location. The creative was a teaser: an animated countdown showing "New smash burgers in River North in [X] days" with a glowing burger animation and the restaurant's address. No menu, no prices — just anticipation.

Phase 2: Opening Day + Weekend (Days 3-5)

Ambassador count increased to 8 — four covering the lunch window and four covering dinner. The creative shifted to three variants, rotated by AdLuxy's AI:

Variant A: "Grand Opening NOW — Free milkshake with any burger. [Distance] meters →" with a live GPS-calculated distance to the restaurant and a directional arrow.

Variant B: A slow-motion video of a smash burger being pressed on the grill, with the address and "OPEN NOW" overlaid.

Variant C: Social proof messaging: "[X] burgers served today" with a live counter (updated hourly by the marketing team via the AdLuxy dashboard), plus a 5-star review quote.

The Results

47,200

Verified impressions (5 days)

340%

Above foot traffic projections (day 1)

$0.089

Cost per verified impression

Day 1 (opening day): The restaurant had projected 280 covers for the day based on historical opening-day performance. They served 952 covers. The kitchen was overwhelmed by 12:30 PM and had to implement a waitlist system that had not been planned. Every table turned 3+ times during the lunch window.

Days 2-3 (opening weekend): Traffic remained elevated at approximately 220% above projections. The "free milkshake" offer was exhausted by Saturday afternoon (they made 600+ milkshakes). The social proof variant (Variant C) outperformed the other creatives by 34% in terms of attention duration, according to the AdLuxy AI metrics.

Creative performance: The AI optimized creative rotation throughout the campaign. By day 3, Variant C (social proof counter) was receiving 55% of rotation time due to its superior attention metrics. Variant A (distance + direction) was second at 30%. Variant B (video) was third at 15%. This optimization happened automatically — no human intervention required.

QR code tracking: 1,240 QR code scans over 5 days. Of those, 38% redeemed the free milkshake offer. The QR code data showed that most scans happened between 11:30 AM-12:30 PM and 6-7 PM — the peak decision-making windows for lunch and dinner.

Social media amplification: Bystanders posted 23 photos and videos of the walking billboard ambassadors to Instagram and TikTok. One TikTok video of an ambassador navigating through a crowded intersection with the glowing backpack gained 42,000 views. Total earned social impressions: approximately 180,000.

ROI Analysis

Total campaign cost$4,200
Incremental covers (above projection)~1,420 covers over 5 days
Average ticket$18.50
Incremental revenue~$26,270
ROAS (return on ad spend)6.3x

A 6.3x return on ad spend — and that only counts the direct, measurable impact during the 5-day campaign. It does not account for repeat visits from customers acquired during the opening, social media exposure (180,000+ impressions), local press coverage, or the long-term benefit of a strong opening on the restaurant's reputation in the neighborhood.

Lessons Learned

1. Proximity matters more than reach. Every impression was within walking distance of the restaurant. Zero wasted reach. This is the core advantage of walking billboards over any other OOH format for local businesses.

2. Dynamic creative outperforms static. The AI-optimized creative rotation improved results continuously throughout the campaign. The winning creative (social proof counter) would not have been identified without automated testing.

3. Pre-opening buzz amplifies opening day. The 2-day teaser phase built anticipation that contributed to the outsized opening day results. Pedestrians who saw the countdown on days 1-2 sought out the restaurant on day 3.

4. Scale operations for success. The restaurant was not prepared for the volume. If running a walking billboard campaign for an opening, staff up beyond projections.

5. Earned media is a bonus, not the goal. Social media coverage was valuable but unpredictable. The campaign was designed to drive foot traffic directly — earned media was a cherry on top.

What the Marketing Director Said

"We have opened 12 locations before this one. None of them hit these numbers on opening day. The walking billboards were the only variable we changed. The real-time analytics blew our minds — we could literally see foot traffic increase in real time as ambassadors entered different streets. We are now using AdLuxy for every new location opening."
